Mint Juleps in the garden-Derby 143

What a great time of year it is! Derby 143 will run at Churchill Downs on Saturday and our mint patch is easily ready for the challenge. This year’s mint juleps will be made with Woodford Reserve’s finely-crafted bourbon whiskeys. Now, if you’re into juleps, you’ll appreciate the wonderful “find” fellow bourbon cousin, Claudia, recently made. Twelve solid silver julep cups, which happened to be engraved with her initials, at just the right price. I’m guessing she’s having a party for 12 this year.
Here’s our go-to mint julep recipe!

Mint Julep
Rim glass with powdered sugar. Fill to 3/4 full with crushed ice. Pour in 2 jiggers of simple syrup.
Add 2 + jiggers of fine Kentucky bourbon. Top off with a splash of ice water. Add a straw and a tall sprig of fresh mint to tickle your nose…and toast to My Old Kentucky Home.

Simple Syrup
Boil ‘til clear: 2 cups of sugar + 1 cup water. Pack in 1 bunch fresh mint leaves. Refrigerate overnight in a mason jar.
